Nose Job Open Rhinoplasty or Closed ?

Rhinoplasty Before answering the question of whether the  open  or closed rhinoplasty is better, let’s take a look at the details such as what rhinoplasty is, what it is for, what are the types of rhinoplasty surgery and what are the differences between them. Then, let’s answer the question of whether open or closed surgery is better?

The operations in which the deformities, size and disturbed bone structure of the nose, which is one of the most important and striking parts of the face, are corrected, are called rhinoplasty.

Nose aesthetic surgeries are performed with 2 different methods. One of them is open rhinoplasty and the other is closed rhinoplasty.

In open rhinoplasty, an incision of about half  cm is made from the lower end of the nose, between the nostrils, and through this incision, the skin tissue is removed, allowing access to the bone and cartilage tissue where corrections will be made during the surgery.

In open nose surgeries, access to many points on the nose that are desired to be corrected is provided. The disadvantage of open rhinoplasty operations is that, although an incision is made and the skin tissue is removed, more edema occurs in the patient’s nose area after the operation compared to closed rhinoplasty operations. The  healing process is a little long in comparison with closed rhinoplasty.

In open rhinoplasty, the scar of the half-cm incision at the tip of the nose becomes invisible in approximately 6 months. In addition, if the nose is wide, the nostrils may need to be reduced. In these patients, open rhinoplasty is preferred and highly recommended.

In closed rhinoplasty,  small incisions are made under the inner mucosa of both nasal wings instead of the tip of the nose. In this way, the skin tissue is removed, the nasal bone and cartilage tissue are intervened and the desired corrections can be done . There is  no incision made on the nasal skin from the outside.

The biggest advantage of closed rhinoplasty operations compared to open rhinoplasty surgeries is that there is much less edema in the patient’s nose area after the operation and the recovery process is much faster. In this way, the patient can return to his social life in a shorter time.

Thanks to less edema and faster recovery after closed rhinoplasty surgeries, the patient can achieve the desired nose appearance sooner. Again, the duration of closed rhinoplasty surgery is much shorter than the duration of open rhinoplasty.

The disadvantage of closed rhinoplasty is that it  does not allow a wide range of interventions as in open rhinoplasty. Open rhinoplasty , on the other hand, allows more extensive operation in the shape of the nose and in the bone and cartilage structure.

As a result, both open and closed rhinoplasty have advantages and disadvantages. Which of these 2 methods will be chosen  depends on the patient’s expectation from the operation, the shape of the nose, and the bone and cartilage structure and surgeon’s recommendation . There is also a method that each doctor often uses in his own way. For the rhinoplasty operation to be performed in a full-fledged hospital, the  doctor will suggest the most appropriate method in line with his experience and according to the current condition of the patient.

Is Closed Nose Job Surgery Hard to Perform?

After deciding to have rhinoplasty, patients who are confused  whether it should be done with the open or the closed nose surgery method, want to learn the difficulty level of both surgeries.

In open rhinoplasty , the skin tissue is removed and the nose is easily intervened thanks to the incision made from the tip of the nose, while in closed rhinoplasty, the nose is intervened with incisions made through the nose. For this reason, although the postoperative edema is less and the recovery process is faster, it is more difficult to intervene in the nose in closed nose surgeries than in open nose surgeries. Patients who want to have closed rhinoplasty surgery should pay attention to the fact that the doctor is experienced in this type of surgery when choosing a doctor.

Since both operations are performed under general anesthesia for the patient, the surgery process and post-operative period are similar. It only makes a difference surgically.

In How Many Days Does Closed Nose Surgery heal?

The recovery period of closed rhinoplasty is much shorter than that of open rhinoplasty. Since the skin tissue is not removed and therefore less edema occurs, the patient can return to his daily life in a much shorter time.

Mild edema that occurs after nose job performed in so called closed technique is completely gone 5-7 days after the surgery. At the end of about a week, the patient can easily return to his/her  daily life. In closed rhinoplasty, the aesthetic sutures placed in the nose dissolve on their own.

Therefore, there is no suture removal process. After the operation, the patient should not use sunglasses for 3 months, if possible, protect the face area against the harmful rays of the sun and stay away from heavy sports for 2 months. In a period of approximately 6-12 months, the nose attains its final appearance.

Is Open Nose Surgery Easier to Perform?

Open rhinoplasty is easier than closed rhinoplasty as it gives the chance to interfere with the nasal bone and cartilage structure by removing the skin tissue through the incision made at the tip of the nose. During open nose surgery, the entire nose structure is anatomically clear.

In this way, the doctor can see the corrections to be made much more easily and intervene. Again, if the ridge of the nose needs to be shaped in accordance with the patient’s face proportion and needs  it is easier to correct it by filing it in open rhinoplasty technique.

Is Closed Rhinoplasty Permanent?

Although there may be minor proportional changes caused by the changes in the face with the age of the patient, there is no change in the way given to the nose in basically closed rhinoplasty. In rhinoplasties  that are not performed  by experienced and specialist doctors, if the procedure is not performed correctly, the tip of the nose may fall or turn to one side over time. However, this is not a result of the aesthetic operation, it is the result of the wrong performed  operation  by the wrong surgeon.

For this reason, it is very important for patients who want to have rhinoplasty surgery to be meticulous in choosing a doctor. After rhinoplasty, the final shape of the nose becomes clear in about 12 months and the result is permanent.

If there is no change in the shape of the nose during the healing process, it will not happen again. If the patient is not satisfied with the permanent nose shape after the surgery, shorter revision operations can be performed.

Who is a Good Candidate for a Closed Nose Job?

RhinoplastyWe can say that closed nose surgery is more suitable for noses that do not require extensive intervention in the cartilage and bone structure, and where simpler corrections are needed.

Who is Open Rhinoplasty for?

Although closed rhinoplasty can be easily applied to every patient group. Open nose surgery is more suitable for people who will not make major changes in the nasal structure, who require  mild corrections and  who want to get rid of edema in the nose in a short time or who need a faster recovery process because they need to return to work life as soon as possible.

Are There Any Scars in Open Rhinoplasty?

The incision made in open rhinoplasty operations is only half a cm long between the nostrils. Therefore, even during the healing process, there is not a very large scar. With the completion of the healing process, the scars become quite pale and almost come to the natural color of the skin.

How Long Does Open Nose Surgery Take Time?

We can say that open nose surgery usually takes about 2-2.5 hours. Rhinoplasty surgeries are procedures performed under general anesthesia and in fully equipped operating room conditions. If there is no great curvature or other problems that need to be corrected in the shape of the nose, the duration of the operation does not exceed 2.5 hours. However, this period does not include the application of anesthesia and the awakening process.
