What Is Diastasis Recti or Abdominal Separation?

Abdominal muscle separation, that is, diastasis recti problem, is seen in 60% of new mothers. Diastasis recti, the separation of the abdominal muscles from the middle, is common among women who have given birth. The uterus stretches the abdominal muscles to adapt to the growing baby. In single, twin or multiple pregnancies, the pressure in the abdomen increases. This also happens when the baby is large.

The muscles lose their normal structure and stretch excessively and leave the midline. By the end of the pregnancy period, it is seen that there is an enlargement of 9 cm to 35 cm in the abdomen of women. This growth in the abdomen leads to separation of the abdominal muscles or rupture of the muscle rectus. For this deformation seen in the abdominal muscles, it should be combined with surgical intervention.

Heavy lifting exercises or squatting movements to flatten the abdomen are another cause of Diastasis Recti problem. This situation causes urinary incontinence, sagging in the belly and bloating in the abdomen starting from the stomach area in women. Diastasis Recti problem causes pain in the back and pelvis, as the center of gravity changes in women, paves the way for hernia development and leads to hernia formation.

With full tummy tuck surgery, these muscles in the abdomen are brought to the midline, the deformation with the braces opening is combined and treated, and the abdominal muscles are sutured firmly to regain their old appearance. In this way, hernias and larger abdominal deformities that may occur in the future are also prevented. After tummy tuck surgery, the patient’s abdomen has a flat, taut and aesthetic appearance.

Tummy TuckWhat does not change with Abdominoplasty

Abdominoplasty is not performed for the purpose of losing weight. If women are planning to lose weight or have a baby in the future, it’s better to consider having a tummy tuck after making these plans.

Abdominoplasty does not correct the stretch marks in the skin, although some of the excess skin under the belly button is removed during the surgery. By this way some of the stretch marks were also removed with skin.

What is the Difference Between Tummy Tuck ”Abdominoplasty” and Mini Tummy Tuck ”Mini Abdominoplasty”?

One of the most curious and asked questions when our patients come to the examination is “the difference between tummy tuck and mini tummy tuck”.

As a result of the comprehensive examination of our patients by your doctor, the suitability of mini tummy tuck or full tummy tuck surgery is determined. The condition of the patient’s body determines which surgery will be performed. Each patient may not be suitable for every surgery.

Plastic surgeon evaluates the location and amount of excess skin in the abdomen to decide which full tummy tuck or mini tummy tuck is appropriate. If the patient has excess skin in the area below the belly button, a “mini tummy tuck” may be performed. If a mini tummy tuck is performed, the patient’s belly button remains and the excess skin under the navel is removed. The skin in the lower abdomen is pulled down and the mini tummy tuck is completed.

There are fewer incisions and fewer scars in mini tummy tuck surgery. The post-operative scar can be positioned below the bikini line.

If there is a large amount of loose and wrinkled skin on the belly button, full tummy tuck surgery is appropriate. In full tummy tuck surgery, a new belly button needs to be made and the surrounding excess skin is removed.

In full tummy tuck surgery, the entire abdominal skin is stretched, the upper and lower abdominal skin together. After the full tummy tuck surgery, the surgery scar is longer than the mini tummy tuck surgery.

What about relationship tummy tuck and stretch marks?

Stretch marks are commonly observed after pregnancy or weight changes. Most peoples’ stretch marks are located on the lower abdomen, on tummy tuck surgery when saggy skin is removed and tightened, you can also get rid of stretch marks.

Tummy Tuck Recovery Process!

When you wake up after tummy tuck surgery, you should remember that there will be a compression garment for your abdomen. Your abdominal area will be bandaged and wrapped with a medical compression garment to prevent healing and this will also help to protect your new shape of your body. This special type of post-operative compression garment is used to reduce swelling, edema and bleeding that may occur after surgery.

Along with all this, there will be drain tubes placed under the skin. These tubes will be removed within 24-48 hours. These drains will prevent the minimal bleeding and leaks that may be inside from remaining under the skin by drainage. Pain medication and muscle relaxers are going to be prescribed. First 2-3 days, patients generally can go back to their work but you should not forget to avoid exercise and heavy lifting.

After tummy tuck surgery, it is recommended to sleep with 1-2 pillows behind your knees. These pillows will keep your legs bent and thus reduce the tension in the abdominal area. At first, you will be able to walk obliquely due to the tension in the abdominal region, and later on, you will be able to walk gradually more upright. For 1 week and 10 days after the operation, it is necessary to lie at a 45-degree angle and to stand in the house at an incline. Thus, the scars heal in a short time and the incision area is not stretched more than necessary.

Blood collection under the skin (hematoma), infection, scar tissue problems are very rare but possible complications after abdominoplasty. Against these, a drain (the tube that will drain the accumulated blood) is placed in the operation area, antibiotics, appropriate dressings for the wound area and necessary supportive drugs (gels that correct the scar, massages) are applied.

After tummy tuck surgery, you stay in the hospital for 2 nights. By wearing a special garment for the patient, it is ensured that he/she regains his/her social and business life as soon as possible. The patient can normally return to light daily activities from 5-6 days after the operation. Next week edemas and bruising is going to diminish. After second to third weeks swelling and edemas can continue. In this process, light physical activity and massages are recommended. He can start his active life in 15-18 days. Becomes able to do sports activities in 6-8 weeks. The use of the specially designed compression garment after the operation is at least two weeks, but it is recommended that you continue to wear the compression garment for 4-6 weeks.

After one month, your surgical results become clear and you can go back to your normal daily activities, including strenuous exercise and heavy lifting.

Pregnancy After Tummy Tuck

Women who have had a tummy tuck are wondering if they can get pregnant again and if there will be any complications if they get pregnant. This question is very important for a woman who is thinking about becoming a mother.

There are no obstacles to getting pregnant after tummy tuck surgery. Abdominoplasty is not an operation that prevents a woman from becoming pregnant. Pregnancy should be under the control of a doctor, and the recovery period after a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) should end, and women should wait for the doctor’s approval. The period of pregnancy is decided by the plastic surgeon. In short, this process should be under the supervision of a doctor.

Abdominoplasty is performed on healthy women who have good health.

A tummy tuck should be performed 1 year after conception. In 1 year, the mother should reach her ideal weight by exercising regularly and eating healthy. If a woman wants to get pregnant again, she can postpone tummy tuck surgery. After a recent pregnancy, flabbiness, cracking and sagging of the skin on the abdomen may occur.

Abdominoplasty can be performed on patients who have never had major abdominal surgery before and for whom surgery is appropriate as a result of an examination by a plastic surgeon.

Scars After Tummy Tuck

Tummy TuckIn a full abdominoplasty, a scar remains inside the bikini underwear. The scar in the full tummy tuck operation is longer than the cesarean section line and also on the ground of the cesarean section line, with two straight lines in the direction of the waist. This line is planned to remain under the bikini. It is recommended not to stretch too much until you recover after a tummy tuck operation wound.

In mini tummy tuck, the surgical scar is lined as the cesarean section scar long and also where the cesarean section is performed. After the stretching process is done, a scar will remain in the underwear.

If the tummy tuck scars are still seen after 1 year, laser treatments are used. The most effective laser in scar treatment is fractional laser. For fading scar, the line can be treated with laser in 4-6 sessions.

Tummy Tuck Scars Over Time

Each individual’s skin quality and wound healing process are different. This gives us information about how the scars will heal after any injury or surgery. The healing process of the scar after the tummy tuck is as follows:

Immediately after tummy tuck: The scar is usually in the form of a thin and pink line. The skin tissue shows a rapid recovery and an effort to close this incision within a few weeks after surgery.

Tummy tuck scars one month later: The wound is now completely closed. Increased collagen and blood flow in the scar area causes the existing scar to appear darker, thicker and more prominent. This outlook may worsen over a few months.

Tummy tuck marks after six months: The scar may be red and raised or should begin to lighten. Excess collagen in the scar tissue will be partially broken down and blood flow will be reduced. This ensures that the appearance of scars is gradually reduced and the scar is flattened.

Tummy tuck scars after one year: The scar is now noticeably flatter, thinner and less noticeable. This deletion in the scar continues gradually.

Tummy tuck scars after five years: Now the scar will have faded, it will now look like a white thin line. It may also fade a little more over time.

During this scar healing process, your doctor will make suggestions that will speed up the passage of the scar. Proper healing of the scar, not getting infected and not opening the stitches will ensure that the process progresses in a controlled manner. For this reason, wearing a corset, not forcing the stitches and doing the wound care properly will ensure that the scars are smooth and as desired. In addition, after the wound is completely closed, silicone-based creams and tapes will accelerate the healing and erasure process of the tummy tuck scar.

  • Eating healthy
  • Do not use blood thinners and Aspirin
